EDITOR'S NOTES

Dear Members, Over the past quarter I’ve given thought to the meaning of ECI.  With ECI membership approaching the 400 mark, it seemed like a good time to reflect and evaluate just what makes membership so valuable. First, I realized that clubbing, uniting or combining for a common cause, certainly isn’t new.  Mankind has been doing this for thousands of years.   We’re a sharp species since we’ve come to realize that there is strength and value in unity. MESSAGES FROM NEW MEMBERS

Colin Goode #372 - I am interested in purchasing examples of encased farthings, other than Hooper Struves and Chelsea Hotel, Jersey. If you have any examples you are willing to sell, please feel free to contact me.

Secondly I am interested in images of any encased farthings, because I am trying to catalogue the varieties. If you have any images of encased farthings and you are willing to contribute, can you send me a 1200dpi scan of the obverse and reverse.
Many Thanks

Darlene Koykar #374 - New to the encased coin collection. I want to start by collecting any Frank J. Wachewicz of Hammond, IN (i.e., The Wachewicz Way) encased pennies from the 1920's. He is my great-grandfather. Any encased coins from Wachewicz era would be very special to me.

SECRETARY'S DESK

~Once again one or more of ECI's members have made complaints to our ISP or elsewhere that we are sending spam when we email an ECI announcement. This is a crock of bull. Each email sent by us plainly states in full view at the bottom; "(YOU ARE RECEIVING THIS EMAIL BECAUSE YOU ARE A REGISTERED MEMBER OF ECI – SHOULD YOU WISH TO BE REMOVED FROM THE ECI MAILING LIST CLICK ON THIS LINK AND TYPE YOUR NAME AND “REMOVE” IN THE SUBJECT LINE." Whoever you are please stop being such an ASS and let us know that you prefer not to receive messages from us. I will be more than happy to remove your name from our mailing list. This makes twice that we have had to fight this battle and it makes me mad as hell to think that one of us would cause such trouble. Time spent by me clearing the matter with all the powers that be can be better spent pursuing more meaningful things in my life. Whoever you are; you was not forced at gun point to register, so email me HERE and resign. Cecil

Panel Discussion On Varied Encased Topics

~In early June we invited a number of members to participate in a panel of sorts addressing several topic of interest concerning the collecting of encased coins. Some of those who were asked to join in the discussion chose not respond. Fortunately eleven did and the following is the results. Our goal in initiating the discussion was hopefully to arrive at a consensus. Needless to say that did not occur; nevertheless the responses are very informative and food for thought. The following is an modestly edited transcript.  MORE

POTPOURRI: With Jerry Ferrell #93

~If you find that you are no longer receiving email messages from ECI there are good reasons. FIRST - you have changed your address without telling us. When we answer your emails we reply to the address of your original message without checking it against the one we have on file. So don't take it for granted that we notice the difference, we won't. SECOND -  for some reason some of your ISP's reject the mail we send to you. THIRD -  If you have a "yahoo" address don't expect to hear from us, we are being blocked. Best advise us of your address thru your ISP. When a message is bounced back to us we immediately remove that member's name from our mailings lists. If you find that it is important to you to receive ECI messages keep us in mind when changes are made. If you would like to be removed from our mailing lists, let us know. We have no desire to bother those who have no interest in what is happening with ECI. When visiting the website check the "Announcement's" link for updates on what is happening as far as specials and others good stuff goes.

~Did anyone find the RPM 1943D encased ECI cent that I talked about last time? Did you look?

~Another seller on eBay referencing ECI: "The Encased Collectors International newsletter listed a 1907 Niagara Falls Teddy Bear Encased Penny that sold on Ebay for $739! (Same design as this Coin, just different advertising and different date coin)."

~Reminder from eBay: "We are working hard to combat the practice of excessive shipping charges on eBay and very much appreciate your help in identifying sellers who you believe are charging excessively for shipping. Please report these types of listings to us. We can only clean up this problem by working together."

MS Walkers, Car Salesman & Encased Cents  by Elaine Rexdale #94

~My first big adventure was attending the Multiple Sclerosis Walk on May 19th, 2007 at Bear Mountain Park, NY.  My husband and I began our trip to the mountains under heavy black clouds.  We were soon no surprised by the deluge that followed.  The further north we went up to the mountain, the colder it got.  We seriously considered going home…after all, who would walk in such a cold down pour?  MORE

Series Encased by  Jim Lawniczak #17

~There are many merchants and places that made more than one encased piece.  This makes sense, because a customer who has once bought a product is much more likely to buy it again.  In fact, that is one of the main lessons that is hammered into sales people, time and again.  It is a much more profitable use of time to sell to former customers than to try and find completely new customers. Meet Glennon Neubauer ECI #41by Elaine Rexdale #94

Glennon lives in Diamond Bar, California, a canyon city 15 miles north of Disneyland. While he’s able to see and hear Disneyland’s summer night fireworks, he’s very busy teaching computer science to college students as well as overseeing three bachelor degree programs.  Two of these programs specialize in computer games. His typical day begins by leaving home at 6:30 AM and arriving at school around 7:10 AM. His class begins at 7:30 AM.  From 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM he is usually in his office.  MORE

Thoughts About Penny Press Mint by Todd Lammers #206

~I have really enjoyed seeing the variety of encased coins that PPM is striking. ECI's new dollars has the best fit I've seen so far although the encased nickels are a very close second. The brass and bronze casements are very attractive when color contrasting metals are used. MORE

Country Wisdom...

An old southern country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession.

Like many young men, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it.

One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table four objects: a Bible, a silver dollar, a bottle of whisky and a Playboy magazine.

"I'll just hide behind the door," the old preacher said to himself, "when he comes home from school this afternoon, I'll see which object he picks up. If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be! If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a businessman, and that would be okay, too. But, if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunkard, and, Lord, what a shame that would be. And worst of all, if he picks up that magazine he's gonna be a skirt-chasin' bum."

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's footsteps as he entered the house whistling and heading for his room. The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped it into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big swig while admiring that month's Centerfold.

"Lord have mercy," the old preacher disgustedly whispered, "he's gonna be a Congressman!"
